It ain’t what we want, but all of us here in the ‘Ville are ready for the Kentucky Derby and its attendant happenings, aren’t we? And don’t look now, but the 147th Running of the Kentucky Derby is just 16 days away.
But what I wanted to know was this – how close to a real Derby is it going to be this year? So I asked Churchill Downs’ Senior Director of Media, Darren Rogers, for all the details. Rogers, who first appeared on the Rusty Satellite Show way back in 2014, has been a vital part of getting me famous podcast guests all these years, including a number of famed jockeys, trainers and Downs personnel. Listen to our talk for all the scoop on the first Saturday in May, including the identity of the favorite and how you can get tickets.
I talked to Leo Fante for the first time in 2017, just after he’d opened Fante’s Coffee in that old house on Grinstead Drive. We were doing an interview for the EatDrinkTalk podcast, and he was planning to have a Cars and Coffee event for the first time. Cut to four years later, and Fante is still there, and still promoting Cars and Coffee (no comedians, though) after a tumultuous year that saw the business survive two lengthy shutdowns.
Fante didn’t follow the actions of coffee shop competitors, who focused on drive-thru and carryout orders. No, Fante’s is a place where you come in, relax and have a conversation. But Fante did use his decades of coffee business knowledge to expand the distribution of his product to shops all around the state.
